The Hake’s Home Furnishings Story

York County has had many furniture stores come and go. However, Hake’s Home Furnishings in York, Pennsylvania continues to stick around! Mr. Charlie Hake had a dream of becoming a history teacher. But, once he took his first woodshop class, building furniture became his passion. From his front porch on Philadelphia Street and the old Avalon Dairy. Charlie started making and selling his own cedar chests as a side business. While he worked his full-time corporate fast-food job. Charlie knew he was ready to move on and left the corporate world. He was determined to make his hobby his career. He had then decided to start his own business with the help of his mother Charlotte and his sister Charlene! In 1979 Hake’s Woodcraft opened its first location on the Susquehanna Trail in York, Pennsylvania. For years to come Charlie enjoyed building relationships and welcoming lifelong customers to his business. He thrived to make his customers happy with beautiful quality furniture at great prices! Charlie wanted his store to be unique unlike the big box stores. For 40 years Charlie’s business grew and became well-known.

Charlie also played an important part in his employees’ lives. They looked up to him as an inspiration, a teacher and a father figure. He loved sharing his stories and wisdom with all his employees. After 43 years of business Charlie decided to retire in August of 2022. He handed his business over to his manager of 20 years Jessica Coyne. However, Charlie would still be there by her side to help her along the way to becoming a new business owner.

With a little TLC and a fresh coat of paint Jessica was able to make the store her own with the help of her family and co-workers. All the employees who had worked for Charlie stayed to help and work for Jess. By September 1st of 2022 Yorktowne Furniture Company was up and running! Still doing business as Hake’s Home Furnishings. -Unfortunately, on December 4th, 2022, Charlie passed away unexpectedly.

We are dedicated to keeping Charlie’s Legacy going, just as he would have wanted us to. Being honest and genuine to our customers in York County.
